Year 5 Church Visit

1st December 2025

Castlefield Pupils Explore the Christmas Story at St. Mary’s and St. George’s Church

On Tuesday, our Year 5 pupils enjoyed a fascinating educational visit to St. Mary’s and St. George’s Church as part of our Religious Education curriculum.

We were warmly welcomed by Erica, who led a wonderful session focused on the significance of Christmas for Christians and how the festival is celebrated today. The children engaged brilliantly, particularly during a discussion on the Nativity narrative. Erica shared insightful information, explaining that key elements often seen in traditional Christmas plays—like Mary riding a donkey or Jesus being born in a wooden stable—are not actually mentioned in the Bible. Instead, Jesus was most likely born in a cave where animals were kept, offering a fresh, historical perspective on the story.

The learning continued with an engaging quiz and a "find the clues" activity booklet that encouraged the children to explore the beautiful  features of the church. The afternoon concluded on a festive note with drinks, biscuits and a creative activity where pupils made their own Christmas decorations.

The children thoroughly enjoyed exploring the church t and hearing about the importance of a special person and a major celebration in another faith, enriching their understanding of the world around them.
